Michael Riney Internship Program

All Actors Co-op internships share the same basic expectations. At a minimum, applicants must:

  • Possess the knowledge and skills required to work successfully in a specific department of the theater.

  • Be socially mature and self-confident.

  • Be able to take direction and criticism well.

  • Be able to digest new information quickly and apply it productively.

  • Be consistent and dependable in their work habits.

  • Have good communication skills.

  • Enjoy multi-tasking and creative problem-solving.

  • Work comfortably and effectively in a highly collaborative environment.

  • A basic knowledge of computing is essential.

 

Development/Fundraising Internship

Activities: Develop skills fundamental to non-profit fundraising and arts administration. Assist with the cultivation and stewardship of individual and institutional donors. Learn industry best practices for annual fund communications, including solicitations and acknowledgements. Aid the department with research projects. Carry out crucial administrative support, including filing, correspondence, and database management. Provide excellent customer service to an audience of patrons, donors, and high-level volunteers.

Special Qualifications: Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Facility with computers and knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) a plus. Interest in non-profit career opportunities and a passion for the arts highly encouraged.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 30 hours/week; Between Mondays and Fridays, 9am – 5pm; occasional evening and/or weekend assignments. The specific days/hours will be discussed and determined by each department during the interview process. .

Literary Management and Dramaturgy

Activities: Conduct research for plays in production and under consideration, as well as for newsletter articles and program notes; attend rehearsals as needed; compile and update rehearsal scripts; help maintain the Co-op’s in-house library; assist with the solicitation, cataloging and evaluation of new manuscripts, as well as with correspondence to playwrights, agents, theaters and play development programs; attend production committee meetings- Mondays from 5:30-7 p.m.

Special Qualifications: Excellent research, writing and proof-reading skills are essential, and applicants must demonstrate appropriate knowledge of dramatic literature, theater history and playwriting. Experience with playwriting software is also a plus.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 30 hours/week. The specific days/hours will be discussed and determined by each department during the interview process.

Marketing/PR/Publicity

Activities: Observe strategies and procedures for marketing and publicizing the Goodman's season to 17,000 annual Subscribers and the general public; assist with compiling audience survey results, distributing promotional materials, assembling press and review packets, preparing actor bios and maintaining publicity archives; assist with data management and analysis; assist with media events and opening nights.

Special Qualifications: Excellent organizational, interpersonal, writing and proof-reading skills are essential, as is a basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience or coursework in communications-related fields is also desirable.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 30 hours/week; Between Mondays and Fridays.. The specific days/hours will be discussed and determined by each department during the interview process.

Production Management

Activities: Observe the planning and technical management of a year-round season; assist with routine clerical tasks and special projects; conduct research for specific productions; assist stage management as needed; attend production meetings.

Special Qualifications: Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential, as are communication and research skills and a practical knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience in one or more areas of production is desirable.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 30 hours/week; Between Mondays and Fridays, 9am – 5pm; The specific days/hours will be discussed and determined by each department during the interview process.

Stage Management

Actors Co-op has two stages and runs five management teams, one per production. Both house are 99 seat houses.

Activities: Asisst stage managers throughout the production process, beginning with pre-rehearsal preparations and continuing through technical rehearsals and opening night.

Special Qualifications: Experience is required, and applicants must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of stage management techniques and terminology.

Time Commitment: This changes show depending. Shows run with six weeks of rehearsals (8 for the musical) and six weekends of a run.

Applicants are encouraged to submit materials early as interns may be selected prior to application deadlines.

Every applicant must submit:

  1. An official Actors Co-op Internship Application (available below)

  2. Business resume (not your acting resume)

  3. A cover letter detailing why you are interested in this specific internship at our organization

You may apply for more than one internship, but must submit separate cover letters for each.  We will acknowledge receipt of all applications. If we believe you are a match, we will schedule a follow up interview with you.

Eligibility

Interns must be available for at least two days a week for duration of the internship. Stage Management or Production Managment interns will need to be available for the duration of a run to their assigned show.

Current undergraduate students and people who graduated from an undergraduate program within one semester of application date are eligible for internships.
